Dark Side Of The Moon

Much has been written about the current struggles of the Saratoga Springs Housing Authority. No one can deny that Executive Director Ed "Spike" Spychalski is receiving gluttonous compensation for his duties. Recently, The Saratoga Affordable Housing Group, a so-called affiliate of the SSHA, has been caught up in the downhill avalanche of negativity surrounding the Housing Authority. The leading antagonist in this drama is city resident John Kaufman. From an outside perspective, most would view Kaufman as some altruistic soul hell-bent on exposing corruption for the betterment of humanity. But alas, as is often the case, reality is a far cry from what is exposed in the press. Kaufman has a score to settle...and, ultimately, the poor of Saratoga Springs will bear the brunt of his animus.

Back in the day, Kaufman and his "partner" Jane Weihe were very active in City Democratic circles. She, losing multiple elections for City Council seats and he, working behind the scenes to ensure development in the city was appropriately demonized to ensure future homogeneity. His appeal was centered around the idea that "certain kinds" of multi-family developments didn't pay for themselves. Pretty sure he wasn't talking about luxury condos on Railroad Place. This may seem a peculiar stance for a progressive liberal but its pretty much status quo in Saratoga Springs for these types.

Kaufman's beef with the SSHA is nothing more than a tangent of his larger squabble with former SSHA Board Director Dennis Brunelle. Back in the early 2000's, Brunelle, along with a large group of concerned citizens, formulated a group dedicated to providing housing for the County's working-class poor. The purpose of the group was to, in the face of virulent anti-development opposition from people like Kaufman, advocate for development projects that included affordable housing. This was a no-no. Kaufman lambasted Brunelle for having the tenacity to support development in the city and claimed he ought to be ashamed (for, presumably, getting in bed with evil developers). Of course, Brunelle's efforts were largely unsuccessful until the completion of new, affordable units on Allen Drive. The same units Kaufman is now identifying as having undergone some sort of illegal asbestos removal.

Now, say what you will about Brunelle's defense of the SSHA fiasco, the fact remains that Brunelle didn't profit from his position on the board (aside from travel expenses associated with purportedly acceptable trips for the SSHA) and he has been a life-long advocate for the poor and disenfranchised in Saratoga County. Was he guilty of sticking by his man? Yes. And the appropriate punishment has been leveled. As many of you know, I would be loathe to praise anyone that had ANY kind of personal/professional association with Val Keehn, but Dennis Brunelle is a good man who simply got in over his head. The same cannot be said for John Kaufman. The only time Kaufman gets involved with an issue is:

  1. When his roommate is running for office.
  2. When developers attempt to change the demographics of the City. And,
  3. When he's got a personal score to settle.
The latter is whats playing out right now. Kaufman will ride the Allen Drive pony till its slumped in a heap on the side of the road. Sure, there are problems with Allen Drive. But those problems are a direct result of the combative atmosphere created by virulent NIMBY's like Kaufman and his ilk. No doubt those same forces were instrumental in ensuring that any lottery for the new units were restricted to current city residents. No doubt short-cuts may have been taken to stretch scarce development dollars. No doubt Kaufman will piggy back these issues to drive the Saratoga Affordable Housing Group into the ground and halt any further affordable housing development in the City.

Score Settled.

  2. Sounds to me like you have an old grudge against one and fond memories of the other.

I happen to believe that your grudge is probably justified.
I don't know enough about the other gentleman to give an opinion of his past character.

But I do know that people learn and change; sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse.

But the facts are the facts.

And Kaufman, no matter what his motives are, is on the right side of this issue and Brunelle is not.

    1. Shot,

Your wisdom has been silenced for too long.

Kaufman: doing the right thing for ALL the wrong reasons.

  3. Finally someone to see this creep for who he really is. I commented on Lucien McCarty's blog earlier tonite but he has yet to print it. Either protecting dumkauf or just not very good at running his blog. Kauffman is a two bit hack who ran EOC into the ground until they removed him and brought in Brunelle to clean up the mess. That was the first thing that pissed him of. Another was the Anderson project to bring in affordable housing which Kauffman had to be restrained from attacking Brunelle after he spoke in favor of the project. This is clearly Kauffman who wants no affordable housing in town wielding an agenda to take out Brunelle. The problem is Dumkauff is getting danerously close to crashing and burning on this whole cusade he has going.

  4. Kauffman's information is loaded with half truths. He only has some of the information on the Affordable Housing Group. There was already testing done at Allen Drive by State of New York. Does he think the State turned their head just appease this group? Nonsense! The project itself to build was funded by a grant from the state. This Kauffman thinks he's smart but he's not. His 15 minutes of fame are about up. And his wife may run for office again. And Lose again.

  5. This discussion ought not to deteriorate into a personality squabble, nothing positive comes from that. The undeniable fact is that no one in city hall took the initiative to fully investigate how the SSHA has been operating and it's relationship to the workforce housing group and John KAUFMAN DID. His experience working with EOC and insight into not for profit operations gives him credibility. He knows where the "bodies are buried". Essentially he has done a great public service and deserves to be commended not criticized. The focus should remain on how the Workforce Housing group used a 300 thousand dollar city grant, more than 660 thousand in Community development monies and the more than one million dollar loan they got from the Adirondack Trust Co. To whom did they report and to whom were they accountable? Did you forget Brunelles scheme to turn Tom's Lodge into single room occupancy? Wouldn't that have been a nice mess, another infestation haven on the west side? would that have been betterthan the row houses there now? And as far as shortage of workforce housing goes, have you noticed all the for rent signs around town? Let's face it, Brunelle and his ilk have made a nice living from the plight of the needy, and the problems persist. And by the way, why should taxpayers in our city subsidize housing for workers whose employers fail to pay a living wage? Isn't this corporate charity?

    1. This public service announcement brought to you by the West Side Neighborhood Association.

Interesting how you fail to note the hundreds of thousands of dollars of CDBG funds spent on decorative street lighting. And funny, no mention of the targeted gentrification of Beekman St. I guess waste is all well and good so long as it doesn't benefit the needy.

What John fails to observe is that the City (including current and former commissioners of both parties) have been quite anxious to prove to HUD Buffalo that they were serious about building affordable housing in the City. That's why this project has been shepherded by three previous administrations. Allen Drive was a demonstration project. And I can assure you whatever dirt is dredged up by Kaufman is ancient history to Val Keehn, Scott Johnson, and their respective administrations.

Of course, John Franck is, i'm sure, just SHOCKED about all this. Someone should let Franck know that Skip has a firm hold on the resident idiot slot and he'll be hesitant to pass the baton.

  6. Great point Ben! CDBG money indeed was always funneled to McTygue and Co. to use as he and only he was to see fit. Sidewalks for fellow supporters in that West Side Association. Some of their works were blatant slaps in faces to residents whose properties were skipped over for a new walk if they were not supporters. That money you speak of was loaned to purchase the Allen Drive property and mortgage payments are being mad. What's the beef there? Do you think Adirondack Trust would give money to the group if they thought it was a failure? Ben has pointed in the direction of Kauffman not being credible. He made a mess of EOC so how the hell does that make him credible? It would not be surprising at all if him and John Franck are eyeballing future development on south broadway by playing this shell game now to get who they want on the council next election. They want to use this as a platform to run for positions so they can dictate future appointees to lanning and Zoning boards. This way when all the wheeling and dealing starts they can ave their hands in the pot. This was done by Franck and Kuczynski back in 2005 when they were planning their robotic parking garage with a Banquet House across from the library. That plan was foiled the moment Hank K. lost the election.

  7. Nice to see that people are seeing the real motive of the freakshow named John Kauffman. His wife Jane Weihe is lining up as we speak to make a run at the mayors seat. These fools are relentless.

  8. This same John Kauffman is the guy who protested the banks in the early 80's. Adirondack Trust was his primary target then and stirred up much commotion then. To this day he harbors ill feelings against Charles Waite Adirondack bank president. Ironically Adirondack Trust teamed with this affordable Housing Group to make this Allen Drive project a reality. Kauffman may very well be trying to settle more than one score.

    1. You bet he was the guy who protested the bank's actions in the 80's.The commotion was about Adirondack Trust exercising a balloon mortgage payment clause that they had assured clients they would never exercise. Many in the community were being hit with new mortgage payments they could not meet. The bank's actions were declared illegal.

  10. So let me get this straight, Bennie, my boy. You're championing scumbags Spychalski and Brunnelle who have used taxpayer dollars meant to help the old, the poor, and disabled to line their own pockets and the pockets of Ed's family and then making up screwy stories about the guy who exposes all this. What's going on here--has Ed offered your brother the car fixing contract or are you into Ed and Dennie for some gambling debts?

  11. I don't get it. The Anderson project with the faux affordable housing component was defeated. Wouldn't it be the other way around then--Brunnelle would have a grudge against Kaufman?

    1. Yes, we covered that. To the extent that housing conferences are improper Brunelle is guilty. I'm confident the appropriate authorities will seek restitution if warranted.

      Delete
    2. Improper if the conference is for 4 days and the SSHA pays for a weeks stay. Improper if while you're submitting all your travel bills you're telling Stonequist residents there's not enough money to pay to exterminate the bedbugs, that their rents will have to go up and they have to pay for matrass covers.
